12 Dec 2014 Becoming an Indispensable Golden Pillar
In 2006 Teo Jui Chiang encountered Nichiren Buddhism. Although he could not understand fully what this Buddhism was about, the phrase “changing poison into medicine” struck a chord in him and gave him a deep sense of a new life opening up before him.
At that point in his life he had a debt of more than $150,000 due to cash flow issue in his business. He was helpless and desperate, and had developed an escapist attitude.
He participated in SSA activities, and strengthened his faith and understanding of Buddhism. With consistent chanting and diligence at work he saw improvements. These improvements did not come in the form of a windfall which he had initially expected. It was truly though encouragement from SSA leaders and members, and wisdom gained from reading the SSA Times and Creative Life (SSA publications) that helped him develop courage to face his problem squarely and manage them calmly and wisely.
SGI President Ikeda shared in his guidance: “When your determination changes, everything else will move in the direction you desire. The moment you resolve to be victorious, every nerve and fibre in your being will immediately orient itself towards your success. On the other hand, if you think, ‘This is never going to work out,’ then, at that instant, every cell in your being will be deflated and give up the fight, and everything then really will move in the direction of failure.” (Wisdom for a Winning Life: Guidance Today Volume 6, August 3)
He made a list of his outstanding loans and debts, and determined to clear them, bearing in mind to “employ the strategy of the Lotus Sutra before any other.” (Writings of Nichiren Daishonin-1, p 1001) He prayed sincerely and earnestly before each challenge and especially when meeting deadlines in the midst of juggling work, family commitments and SSA activities, including his participation in the National Day items of 2011 and 2012.
With clear perspective and good control Jui Chiang successfully moved ahead in his life, winning the “Singapore’s Outstanding Enterprise 2013” award for his interior design company. He resolved to strengthen his faith more than ever to become an indispensable golden pillar in his district.
