Recollecting Friendship with S R Nathan

Following the passing of Singapore’s ex-president Mr S R Nathan on 22 August, SSA remembered the late Mr Nathan’s friendship with SSA and his valuable life-long contributions serving the people and the nation.

At the Post-National Day 2016 appreciation event held at Senja Soka Centre on 27 August, a remembrance video was shared with the NDP 2016 guests and participants to honour the late Mr Nathan.

General Director Tay Eng Kiat also sent a condolence message to Mrs Nathan expressing our deepest condolences, thoughts and prayers for her bereaved family.

On November 23, 2000, SGI President Dr Daisaku Ikeda and Mrs Ikeda paid a courtesy call on Mr and Mrs Nathan at the Istana where they had a heartwarming 30-minute dialogue.

One year later in May 2001, President Ikeda penned an essay recollecting his wonderful encounter with Mr Nathan, titled “The People’s President”, His Excellency S R Nathan” that is published in the book ‘Singapore – Where the Crown of Humanity Shines’.

The late Mr Nathan is a friend of SSA and he had visited SSA Headquarters in 2007 to unveil a plaque at the SSA Friendship Hall, officially naming it as “a meeting point for cultural, peace, and educational exchanges to promote goodwill and friendship.” Mr Nathan also received the highest accolade of the organization, the SSA Friendship Award on that occasion.
