Seikyo Shimbun Highlights:

The Rizal Society of Philippines conferred upon SGI President Ikeda its very first “Rizal Society International Award for Justice, Peace and Humanisim”. The ceremony took place on Oct 20 at the Philippines International Conference Hall. Chairman of Rizal Society in his speech said that this award is to honour Dr Ikeda as being a leader who has dedicated his whole life with clear goals, vision and value-creation to uphold justice, peace and humanism, just like Prof Jose Rizal.

In 1998 Nov, Dr Ikeda has met with the then chairman of Rizal Society Rogelio M. Quiambao and their dialogue is published in the book (with in Japanese) titled Sekai no Bungaku o Kataru (tentative translation: “Dialogue on World Literature”).

On October 27 and 28, Fudan University and Soka University host the 10th international academic symposium on the philosophy of Daisaku Ikeda, with the theme of humanity’s common destiny. Some 160 scholars from 53 universities and institutes in China and elsewhere took part. President of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries Li Xiaolin sent a congratulatory telegram and SGI President Ikeda sent a message.

On October 25, in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Japan and the People’s Republic of China, a reception is held at the Great Hall of the People. Soka Gakkai Vice President Hiromasa Ikeda attended the reception and was welcomed by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and CJFA President Tang Jiaxuan. The event, organized by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and the China-Japan Friendship Association (CJFA), was also attended by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and other officials.

Manila, Philippines: On October 19, the Pasay (Pasa) City which is known as the 1st class highly urbanized city in Metro Manila, Philippines, bestowed Ikeda Sensei with a key to the city and presented Sensei a certificate of appreciation. This is to commend Sensei’s long years of efforts in maintaining the friendship between Japan and Philippines.

President Harada paid a courtesy visit to the former president of Philippines, Mr Ramos who is now 90 years old. They had about 45 mins of dialogue. Mr Ramos mentioned that Ikeda Sensei always says that youth is the hope and emphasizes that we must build a better world and future for the sake of the younger generations. Mr Ramos had met Ikeda Sensei 5 times. Sensei had planted a Sakura tree named after Mr & Mrs Ramos at the Hachioji Makiguchi Memorial Garden.

New York, USA: On October 16, during the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly First Committee on Disarmament and International Security, representatives from the SGI Office of Peace and Global Issues attended a side event “To Safeguard Future Generations—Multi-Faith Responses to the Threat of Nuclear Weapons.” The group Faith Communities Concerned about Nuclear Weapons, which SGI belongs to, issued a joint statement on the issue of disarmament, including abolition of nuclear weapons and the prohibition of Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS). On October 17, together with the interfaith statement, SGI submitted its own official statement to Marissa Edwards, Vice-Chair of the First Committee.

Beijing City University (北京城市学院) conferred its award of highest honor upon SGI President Ikeda in recognition of his years of contribution to Japan-China friendship. Following the ceremony, a cherry tree was planted in memory of China’s Former Premier Zhou Enlai, next to the cherry tree honoring SGI President Ikeda and Mrs. Ikeda. A monument commemorating the 50th anniversary of SGI President Ikeda’s proposal for the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan was also unveiled.

Representatives led by President Harada met Ms. Li Xiaolin, president of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), and signed a memorandum of friendship and exchange between the Soka Gakkai and CPAFFC for another 10 years till 2028. Representatives also met China-Japan Friendship Association President Mr. Tang Jiaxuan.
